In Term 1, all the teachers at my school went to Hamilton for a course about Maths. This Maths course was taken by a famous Maths expert called Jo Bowler. Jo Bowler talked all about the science behind Maths and what it really is trying to say to us. The teachers took back so much info and have been sharing it with their classes over the last term. For the Kaupeka Hub, the teachers introduced us to a website that Jo Bowler created on Maths. Their are 6 (Six) lessons with all sorts of things about Maths. In every lesson, there are so many videos that talk about Math and then boxes for us to write down our thinking of Math. Since the teachers have organized this and introduced this to us, I have felt that I have gained so much more knowledge on Math and that no matter what happens, their will be a way to solve anything.
For today, I will be including around 5-7 sentences based on each Lesson and what Jo Bowler talked about. This will be in my own words and me saying what I think Math is really all about. Also the understanding that I have gained as well as what Math could do to help me in the future.
Down below is my paragraphs on Math! (In their seperate lessons.)
Lesson 1: Knocking down the Myths about Math
This lesson was all about the science behind Maths and what Maths really means. We got asked a few questions to asnwer based on what we learnt from those certain videos and some options to choose from on what we thought as right and what was wrong. One main point that I will be taking away from this lesson is that there are so many different ways to solve math.
Lesson 2: Maths and Mindset
This lesson was all about your growth mindset that you should have when doing math. Challenge yourself. If you get asked if you want to do a challenge in Maths, take it. The more challenges you take in Math, the more your brain will grow and get a more understanding of that Math. It also talked about that you need to believe that you can acheive in things like Math. It can help you lots and can mean a lot of important things. One main point that I will be taking away from this lesson is that you should always believe to acheive.
Lesson 3: Mistakes and Speed
This lesson was all about your growth mindset that you should have when doing math. (Like the lesson above!) It talked about what happens when you speed through tests and when you make mistakes and other things sort of along the lines like those above. For example, if you speed through answers, you won't gain the depth of the understanding of the questions and be able to tell it back to someone. Then for making mistakes, don't feel bad. If you make a mistake in maths, your brain grows because your learning from it where as if you don't make any mistakes, your not learning anything. One main point that I will be taking away from this lesson is that making mistakes is so important when doing maths.
Lesson 4: Number Flexibility, Mathematical Reasoning and Connections
This lesson was all about the ways you can figure out a maths question using different ways that you have learnt. If you approach a question and it seems too hard, look around, see what you can find to help you. For example: Ask a peer, use different ways on how you could figure it out, try and gain connections with the question and use reasoning. One main point that I will be taking away from this lesson is that use your resources around you before approaching a teacher and think outside the box.
Lesson 5: Number Patterns and Representations
This lesson was all about using different languages in Math. What I mean is that instead of using the same ways you do\use to figure out Math questions\problems, try use patterns, objects and other things like that to solve out problems\questions. A fact about using different ways to do Math is that it can help you gain a better more understanding of Math by using objects, patterns etc and help you see it visually and checking your answers. One main point that I will be taking away from this lesson is that using different ways to solve questions (Visually) should help you understand the question more and help see it more clearly for you.
Lesson 6: Math in Life, Nature and Work
This lesson was all about how Math works when your doing physical sports. For example, if you are doing dance or a sport, you can't be a pro at it without using your brain and the Math. In dance, you can't just do the steps without thinking otherwise it's kinda weird where as, if you use your brain, that will help you. This is called Math. Math doesn't just happen when doing Math, it actually happens every time you do something that involves thinking. One main point that I will be taking away from this lesson is that no matter what I do, Math is always going to be involved.
What did you think of that?
Well, when we had to answer the questions, if we got it right or did a good deep\depth answer, we would get a point. At the end of the lesson, you got a certificate with your name and your percentage.
Down below is my certificate that I recieved!
Have you ever done a Math Course like this before?
If you haven't, would you be interested?
