Welcome back!
I hope you have enjoyed reading the past few blogs that I have published. Feel free to write a comment on one of my posts and to give me some feedback. Anyway back to today's blog. In today's blog, I will be talking about swimming\swimming lessons.
Enjoy!
During week 7 &8 the whole entire school are going to Graham condon to do swimming. We will be doing this each day! (I'm sure this will be very tiring.) Anyway, my school have done this over the last couple of years, so we are pretty much use to it. The Kaupeka hub will be going with the kakano hub. (Year 1 and 2). Now let's get to the main part of this blog!!
Written Monday 3rd September 2018:
Today we started swimming lessons for the first time this year. This will continue for 2 weeks! My teacher (Miss Lover) is taking me and a few other groups to swimming for the next two weeks. We started off with pairing up with a one or two kakano buddies that we are responsible for, for the next two weeks. I got paired up with a girl named Nieve and a girl named Tayla. They are very cool! Anyway, after getting paired up, we went on the bus to swimming. (Graham Condon.) When we arrivied, we went into our gender's changing rooms and then got into our togs. After that we split up into year 7&8's and 1&2's for swimming. Our group got to swimming a bit earlier so we got to watch the other groups swim. When it was our time to swim, we went in the pool one by one and started swimming freestyle to the other end. At the end, one of the instructors told us what lane to go in. That is where we would be swimming for the next two weeks!. I got put into lane 7 which is not to hard but not to easy. I liked that very much! When that was all sorted, our instructors told us what we had to do. Me and my group did a bit of freestyle, breathstroke and backstroke. That was really fun!
When it was time to get out, we said thankyou and bye bye to our instructors and then went to get dressed! The first day of swimming was so fun and can't wait to do it again tomorrow and the rest of the 2 weeks!
So that is all about swimming and what the first day of swimming was like. I will post an update on swimming sometime this week about swim saftey and even swimming in our PJ'S!!
Update on Swim Saftey:
Hello again! So Yesterday (Wednesday) we had our first lesson of swim saftey. We got to expereince some thing to do in case of an emergency when we are at sea. Firstly we put on life jackets. We got told on how to put them on. One tip I found very useful is if your fingers can fit down the strap, it's to loose so you tighten it. You keep tightening it until you can't fit your fingers down the strap.
Next one by one we jumped into the pool and swam freestyledown to the other end. Another useful tip when jumping out of something when your in sea is to cover your mouth with one of your hands and then squeeze you nose with that same hand. This helps because if you didn't do this, you will get such a firght when jumping into the cold sea and that can effect your lungs, where as if you cover your mouth and squeeze your nose, you are all safe and don't have to worry about getting a fright when jumping into the sea\pool.
After that we did our suviral backstroke. When we got to the other end, we did a river swim down to the other end.
Later on we got into a line on each side. (Obviously the boys made one line and the girls made th eother line.) Anyway we had a race to see who would get to the other end first. You might think this was easy but actually it wasn't. It wasn't because we had to hold the lifejacket next to each other's armpits. It was okay but very hard!
When we had finished the race, we got into a hudle and then listened to the instructors. They told us who won. Guess what!?
The girls won! YAY!!
Later on we threw our life jackets into the water and then jumped into the pool. We had to try and put our life jackets on in the water. It was very hard indeed!
When that was done, we finally did our last thing before we hoped out of the pool and went to get changed. We all sat down on the side of the pool with our legs tucked up ready to do dominos. When we were in the pool we swam to the lane rope and then back to get out.
I really truly loved this day and can't wait for tomorrow where we get to experince what we need to do on a boat! An update about that will come soon!
Update on swim saftey-boat!
Hello again! Today (Thursday) we got to experince what it would be like on a boat and what to do in a emergency. Let's get to it!
Firstly we jumped into the pool and then had to tred water for 3 mins. It was very tiring! Next we grabbed one of the life jackets that was in the water and then put that on.
After that we had to try and get on the boat. Not all of us could fit on so if you couldn't you had to hudle with everyone else that was in the water and stay close to the boat so you don't drift away.
When we had finished that, we listened on what to do if the boat flips over. Their were three options. The first one was to get on top of the boat, the second one was to go under the boat until it was safe and the third one was to try and flip the boat back to it's normal side. Most small boats you should be able to flip over back to it's normal side but other boats (big boats) you can't so you will have to have another plan ready for action.
Later on we lined up in a line and went under the boat to see what it looked like. We got taught what to hold and what to do when under the boat. Be aware it's easy to breath underneath the boat as it's got breathing holes!
After that we went to the next rotation which was learning about what is in the saftey pack and what to do. Firstly we sat down and lisetned about the saftey pack and what's in and what the use of it is. Some of the things in the saftey pack are: Funnel, radio and rope. (Those are just some of the things in the saftey pack. Their were more!) After the talk we got into pairs and used a rope that saves people from the water. Firstly you tie the rope around your hand and then fill the bucket of water. When that's done, you throw the bucket to your pair that is in the water. Then the person with the rope pulls the person back up and then you switch. I loved this day. It was so cool to experince what to do in a emergency when you are out at sea. I can't wait to do this again soon!
I will post an update on us swimming in our PJ's soon!

Hi Hannah,
ReplyDeleteI love the way you have added photos to show the readers what you are actually talking about rather than being confused.
My favourite part about this blog post would have to be depth of writing that went into the paragraph about boat safety that happened on the Thursday.
Next time you could tell the readers why you did this (certain thing).
Other than that, you have done an amazing job.
Keep up the great work!!
